The Ancient Route – Explore historical sites and Lolland’s natural beauty by bike

Take the Ancient Route and experience 25 km through the scenic countryside east of Nysted. Here, you’ll cycle along Lolland’s southern and eastern coasts, through idyllic villages and green forests, while historical landmarks tell the story of the area’s past.

At Larsson-Bike, you can rent a bike for the trip or have it delivered directly to your vacation address or an agreed-upon starting point, so you can easily set off on the Oldtidsruten.

Explore the Ancient Trail around Nysted

The Ancient Route is a 25-kilometer loop that begins and ends at the harbor in Nysted. From there, the route winds through the flat countryside east of the town and along parts of Lolland’s southern and eastern coasts. Along the way, you’ll enjoy views of both the Baltic Sea and Guldborg Sound, while small villages and wooded areas add variety to the journey.

One of the great nature experiences can be found in Roden Forest, where the trail winds through a fenced-in area with fallow deer. There is also a small population of white fallow deer here. When you reach the salt marshes along the coast, it’s worth keeping an eye on the sky, as sea eagles regularly hunt in the area.

The tour continues through a landscape where the traces of the area’s history become increasingly evident. The Ancient History Trail is a themed route that takes you past more than 150 archaeological sites. Many of them are located in and around Frejlev Forest, where several of the most easily accessible sites are marked with signs.

Along the way, you can also stop at Holten Beach. Here you’ll find a swimming beach and a swimming pier, as well as a public area with tables, benches, a shelter, and a campground. This makes the beach an ideal spot to take a longer break, eat a packed lunch, or go for a swim on a warm summer day.

After passing through Frejlev, the route continues through Kettinge before returning to Nysted. At 25 km, the Oldtidsruten is manageable for most people, and the many sights along the way make it easy to spend a good part of the day on the hike.

Highlights of the Ancient Route

What makes the Ancient Route special is its combination of nature and history. Over just 25 km, you’ll travel through forests, small villages, and coastal landscapes while getting up close to an unusually high concentration of ancient monuments.

Frejlev Forest, in particular, is central to the route’s historical narrative. Here, many of the ancient monuments are hidden among the trees. Along the way, you’ll also pass Knækkerygstenen and Skalkekorset, which are linked to the local legend of a constable who, according to the tale, lost his life here.

The hike is just as varied in terms of nature. In Roden Forest, you might be lucky enough to spot fallow deer, while the salt marshes and coastal areas offer opportunities to spot sea eagles. At Holten Beach, you can take a break right by the water.

Highlights along the way:
  • More than 150 archaeological sites along the route
  • Frejlev Forest and Its Many Historical Remains
  • The Broken-Back Stone and the Shell Cross
  • Roden Forest with fallow deer and white fallow deer
  • Holten Beach, with a swimming beach and a swimming pier
  • The view of the Baltic Sea and Guldborg Sound
  • Small, idyllic villages around Nysted
